Table six · Second World War grand strategy
Call of War
A real-time map of the 1940s where armies take hours to arrive and a match takes weeks to decide.
Call of War is the grand-strategy entry on this map: a Second World War campaign played in real time at a slow pace, on maps from a handful of nations to the whole world. Units move across provinces over hours, research unlocks better tanks and aircraft over days, and a match is decided over weeks by victory points. You give orders, close the tab, and come back to see what happened.
That rhythm suits a working day. Two or three ten-minute visits set production, move stacks and check the newspaper for who declared war on whom; the only time you need to be present is when a front is moving and your neighbour is online. Diplomacy is in-game and matters: coalitions win matches, and a player who talks to the nations around them lasts longer than one who does not.
Depth comes from the map itself. Supply, terrain, unit counters and the long research tree reward the kind of player who enjoys planning a campaign rather than a single battle. The interface is a dense map with menus and takes an evening to learn; the mobile app is a faithful copy of it rather than a simplification.
Gold is the issue. It buys instant production, speed-ups and intelligence, and in a match of thirty strangers one or two gold-heavy players can distort the war. Bytro’s own rules discourage it and some match types limit it, but it is the main thing players complain about, and our fairness mark reflects it. For the rest — scale, pace and the pleasure of a plan coming together over a fortnight — nothing else on the map does what it does.
Stay for the evening if…
- You want real-time strategy at a pace that fits around work
- You enjoy diplomacy with strangers
- You like long campaigns more than quick fights
Settle the bill early if…
- Gold-assisted opponents would spoil it for you
- You want a simple interface
- You prefer building to fighting
