Heroes of History

The newest game on the map: a bright city builder where the battles are fought by collectable heroes.

8.2Reserved tableWeighted mark after three weeks on a free account

Heroes of History is InnoGames’ latest builder and the easiest game on this map to settle into. You develop a city through historical eras, research along a short tree, and send a squad of heroes — Joan of Arc, William Wallace, Hua Mulan, Einstein, among others — into automated battles against the game’s own armies. It plays in a browser without installing anything and shares an account with the mobile app.

The city side is familiar if you have played any modern builder: timers, a visible population of workers, and events that arrive every couple of weeks with their own small loop. Two ten-minute visits a day keep everything moving, and the game is forgiving of a weekend away. There is no city-to-city warfare; the only contact with other players is an arena where your hero line-up fights theirs asynchronously, and a loss costs you nothing but a ranking.

The hero layer is the hook and the limit. Collecting, levelling and combining heroes gives the game a sense of progress the pure builders lack, and the character art is excellent. It is also where the shop lives: gems buy summons, and the event passes are built around them. Our free account kept pace through three eras and placed in the middle of its arena bracket without spending, which is a fair outcome; the top of the bracket is pay-assisted.

Depth is the honest ceiling. Choices on the city are few, battles resolve themselves and the research tree is short. As a first builder, or a second account for someone who finds Forge of Empires fiddly, it is a comfortable reservation. As the only game you play, it may run out of questions to ask you within a couple of months.

Stay for the evening if…

  • You want a builder with nothing to defend
  • You like collecting and levelling a cast of characters
  • You value animation and a clean interface over spreadsheet depth

Settle the bill early if…

  • You want player-versus-player stakes
  • Gacha-style hero summons bother you
  • You want a research tree that takes months to exhaust
